About CAER
The Centre for Applied Ecological Remediation (CAER) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization advancing science-based ecological remediation to address soil, water, and waste contamination. We provide free and subsidized remediation services to communities disproportionately impacted by pollution, including post-fire residential and public sites, brownfields, and community spaces across Los Angeles County.
CAER integrates rigorous environmental science, field implementation, workforce development, and community partnership to restore contaminated land safely and equitably.
Position Overview
CAER is seeking a full-time Field Manager to oversee and coordinate multiple active remediation projects across residential, public, and pilot research sites. This role is responsible for field operations management, regulatory compliance, crew supervision, site coordination, health and safety oversight, and sample logistics.
The Field Manager plays a critical role in ensuring remediation activities are carried out safely, scientifically, and efficiently in alignment with CAER’s technical protocols and grant deliverables.
This is a 12-month full-time position at $40/hour with benefits.
Key Responsibilities
Field Operations & Project Management
Coordinate and manage day-to-day field activities across multiple sites (post-fire residential, parks, schools, brownfields)
Implement soil remediation plans under direction of CAER’s Scientific Director
Develop and manage field schedules and project timelines
Track progress against grant deliverables and reporting milestones
Ensure proper field documentation and chain-of-custody procedures
Health & Safety Compliance
Maintain and enforce site-specific Health & Safety Plans (HASP)
Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and California environmental safety standards
Oversee PPE protocols and hazardous materials handling
Conduct tailgate safety briefings and daily hazard assessments
Team Supervision & Training
Supervise field technicians, interns, and volunteers
Provide hands-on training in sampling protocols, remediation application methods, and safe site practices
Coordinate with Lab & Field Manager on sample handling and logistics
Sampling & Laboratory Coordination
Oversee soil, water, and plant sampling in accordance with EPA methods
Manage sample labeling, storage, and transport to certified laboratories
Maintain sample tracking and quality control procedures
Equipment & Supply Management
Maintain inventory of field equipment and expendables
Coordinate procurement and maintenance of tools and supplies
Ensure equipment calibration and documentation
Community & Site Liaison
Serve as field liaison with homeowners, site managers, municipal partners, and community groups
Represent CAER professionally at field sites
Required Qualifications
40-Hour HAZWOPER Certification (current and up to date for 2026)
Minimum 3–5 years of experience in environmental field work, hazardous site work, remediation, or related field
Experience managing field teams or supervising technicians
Strong knowledge of soil sampling protocols and environmental compliance standards
Experience with hazardous materials handling and PPE requirements
Ability to lift 50 lbs and work outdoors in variable weather conditions
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Strong organizational and documentation skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with post-fire contamination assessment or brownfield remediation
Familiarity with EPA soil sampling methods and California regulatory frameworks
Background in environmental science, toxicology, geology, ecology, or related field
Experience working with community-based or nonprofit organizations
Compensation & Benefits
$40-45/hour (full-time, 40 hours/week) commensurate with experience
12-month employment term (with potential extension based on funding)

Work Environment
This is a field-based role requiring frequent travel to sites across Los Angeles County, including residential neighborhoods, parks, schools, and brownfield properties. Some administrative work may be conducted remotely or at CAER’s lab/office location.
